Mercedes-benz stadium

Size: 71,000 Seat Stadium

Cost: $1,600,000,000

Role: Associate Structural Engineering

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

The all new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC soccer team, is a state-of-the art facility that features sweeping views of the Atlanta skyline; flexible capacity of up to 83,000 seats; a retractable roof inspired by the oculus in the ancient Roman Pantheon; and a 360-degree, five-story tall video board that is the largest in the NFL—and the world.

SYKES was responsible for the design of the foundation systems that included auger cast piles, drilled piers (caissons), and spread footings. Our role also included acting as the engineer of record for the lower bowl precast and the concession and mechanical “lids”.

The foundation design included supporting multiple “MEGA” columns, which support the long span roof trusses.
